Long Weekend is here...

May 19th, 2006 at 04:09 pm

Yay! It's the May long weekend! I work tonight and tomorrow morning and then not again until Wednesday. On Tuesday, my work is having their own version of the Amazing Race. We're in teams of 4 driving all through the city...should be lots of fun!

We have my two nephews (ages 7 and 10) staying with us this weekend and some friends are coming for a visit for two nights. They live about 3 hours away, so it will be nice to see them...just crowded and loud in the house! Hoping for good, sunny weather so everyone can be outside.

I had a no spend day yesterday. It was about time for one! A regular customer at my work came in the other day and handed me an envelope. I didn't open it until later in the evening. It was a thank you card with $100 bill tucked in it! I don't take tips, although a fair amount of people do try to tip me, but I don't think this can go back to her without offending her. She's 79 years old, and has no family, but lots of friends and people who help her out if she needs it. She said it was a gift for helping her through the year...puts me in a bit of an awkward position. Opinions, anyone?

Can I ask, what do you do for a living?

Well...do you not take tips for personal reasons, or it company policy?

If it is company policy, I believe you either have to return it, or follow the companies rules accordingly.

If it is for personal reasons...then keep in mind that the person who gives a gift is doing so because it makes them feel good to do it. You are returning the kindness by being a gracious recipient. If you are really uncomfortable, you might find some way to return the kindness...take her to lunch, send her flowers...but I bet she would most enjoy knowing that you found pleasure in her gift.

    My humble little opinion. Wink

Sounds like she would just like to know she did something nice for you. I would be sure to give her an old fashioned thank you note/letter.........letting her know what I spent the money on, so she knows you appreciated the gesture, and will think of her whenever you see the ____________whatever it is you get for yourself.

Ima--I'm an event planner/coordinator. I also help to manage the main restaurant, which is like a private club. People buy the tables for the year, so we have the same customers pretty much all the time.

Ray and Contrary1--thanks for the ideas. It's a personal choice to not accept tips. I don't think it looks good and I would hate for other people to think some were getting better tables or service because they'd slipped me some money. We try to treat all the customers the same and give them all excellent service...or some days they might all get horrible service! Ha-ha-ha...
I will certainly send her a thank you letter. Should I explain the $20 challenge to her? LOL. Maybe that's where I'll keep the money!

A full house full of noise and laughter is a wonderful thing. The tip is a rather delicate thing. I see it as more of a gift rather than a tip. If I gave a gift I would feel awkward if someone tried to give it back. Is it really a gift looking for influence or is she just a sweet woman looking to say thank you? You know the answer better than anyone here,Smile

You're right, Priceplus! She is just a nice lady giving thanks. I've decided to keep the money, send her a letter, and give her a small gift on her birthday this year--she'll be turning 80!

Thanks, everyone, for helping me keep it all in perspective!

Yes, I think you should keep it. I often give a little something extra to a person that has been kind to me!
