Fleas!

June 27th, 2006 at 01:34 pm

Our neighbour's cat moved into our house last year. Officially he's ours now. Two days ago we realized he has fleas!!! It's horrible...our six year old has bites everywhere. I spent $80.00 on flea spray for the house, flea collars for both cats, shampoo, and a medicine that goes on the back of their necks to prevent the fleas from coming back. I've been doing laundry endlessly, vacuuming like a mad woman, and then throwing out the vacuum bags. Dh is on holidays with his Dad and brothers, and I'm here dealing with work, kids, and FLEAS!

Actually, I think I feel better now after this rant...back to vacuuming...

Keep vaccuming at least once per day. (Dont forget those hard to reach places)...then, you need to RETREAT around the two week mark....this way you will catch the life cycle again and hopefully get all those that were still in eggs when you treated the first time.

If youre still seeing them after that, you will need to repeat the process or call an exterminator.

    Good luck to you!

Another little thing to do, in addition to all the good stuff you're already doing to get rid of the little pests, is to put a shallow pan (like a pie tin or something) with soapy water just in front of a nightlight that's nearly at floor level at night. The fleas jump toward the light and fall in the pan and expire. We did this years ago when our dog had a flea problem for a while. It made me feel better to do it, because there were clearly fleas in there the first few days we did it, and then eventually as we attacked them in other ways we started having mornings with no fleas in the water. That's how we knew we had them beat!

Those Hertz flea collars are dangerous and have been known to kill cats. I wouldn't use them, and especially don't use them in conjunction with the liquid stuff you put on the back of their neck. Using both is too much and could make the cat sick!

Thanks for all the tips, everyone!

Fern, I'll check with our vet. The instructions for the flea collar and liquid stuff (both Hertz) say they are to be used together. Thank you very much for the warning1

I'm off to get some soapy water....

My TIPS FOR A FLEA-HOME can be printed out from my website -FREE.

My Keep Fleas Off bathing and grooming treatment program makes dogs, cats, and
other furry pets seem to be invisible to fleas. My booklet (guide)
was published in 1993, but available only through an environmental group
for many years. It is now on the net and being used as far away as South Africa.

Californians for Alternatives to Toxins (CATS) has endorsed my program; see
    their message on my website.

My articles have been published by The Dog Press, The Dog Place, ANIMAL
WELLNESS Magazine, Vegas News, Alachua Post and many others.

I have been keeping two cats flea-free in Florida since 1992 and I spend about $10 a year to do so.
