Pay Raise

February 16th, 2006 at 12:25 am

I've been asked by my boss to consider going full time in my position at work. This would mean 40 hours a week, as opposed to the 30-35 I work now, a better benefit package, and a 20% pay increase. Hmmm...it all sounds great, but I'm apprehensive as my first priority is my family and I wonder how this will affect them.

We haven't had anything too interesting happening around here. Everyone is happy to finally have a little bit of sunshine, even though it is freezing!

Big decision. Do you need the money or is it just a nice have?

It is only a few hours more and 20% raise. Wow, I would go for it. Save all the extra that you make.

Just to take the other side...I had a chance to increase my hours too at work. I was a half-time employee (but I did get full benefits). Because we were severly short-staffed and DH had just lost his job, I took on some extra hours temporarily. I found that I hated even 5 hours more per week. But, then again, I have a 1 and a 2 year old at home. By the time I got home, I had missed 90% of their day. As soon as things settled down, I went back to 20 hours, although I still have the option to pick up extra time when I want it (until we hire a new person anyway). So I guess what I'm saying is that it has to be a personal decision. Is there any way you can do it on a trial basis, or do you have to make the commitment? Good luck - the extra cash IS nice!

20% is a BIG pay raise! Will it put you in a different tax category than you are now? It would be sad if you were working to pay taxes, KWIM?

    Thanks everyone!

We don't need the money...most of it would go into savings. Jodi, I would love to tell them that I would do it on a trial basis, but it's the difference between an hourly position and a salaried position, so I don't think they'll let me 'try' it out.

Our kids are 12, 9, and 6. Dh works part time about 10 minutes from home, and my job is also a 10 minute commute. I think what it's going to come down to is if I hate it, I'll quit and look for something else. I definately won't be touching any of the extra money until I know for sure whether I'm going to stay at the job!
